Roland appeared as the ever endearing (and oh so pedantic!) character Rabbit in the much loved Winnie the Pooh. Mounted by KickstArt Productions, Winnie the Pooh played during the June/July school vacation period and brought the 100 Acre Wood to a new generation of children (of all ages).

Roland engaged with Eden College and Glenwood High School to be musical director for “13 The Musical” which played at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. Working alongside directors Marion Loudon and Kirsten Smith, with choreography by Jasmine Rose, this popular musical (now a Netflix movie) created great excitement for learners and audiences alike.

Once on This Island at Roy Couzenz Theatre. Roland was engaged as musical director for the staging of the 1990 Broadway musical by Ahrens & Flaherty. Working alongside director Steven Stead they brought this Tony Award winning story to life with talented learners from Westville Boys & Westville Girls High School.

Fall in love all over again. A (Sorta) Love Story is a jukebox musical conceptualized by David Fick who also starred, alongside Amy Trout. The show combined favorite numbers from well known composed like Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim and others. Studded with musical theatre favourites from local and international stages, the show had toes tapping as it looked at love from all angles.

Witty off-Broadway musical “Edges” enjoyed its South African premiere with Roland Perold as producer. Spending Friday night at home on Facebook? You’re not alone. A charming song cycle by Pasek & Paul, this musical delighted new musical theatre fans; a testament to its worldwide popularity.

From the thrill and terror of the first date, to finding someone to grow old with. Roland’s staging of this popular Off-Broadway musical garnered a Standard Bank Ovation award and enjoyed packed houses at various theatres. Roland produced, musically directed, and later starred.

The Last Note is an original musical which tells the story of Alexander; a concert pianist who disappears after a big public embarrassment. The piece was Roland’s final submission for his Masters Degree at Bath Spa University where it premiered and later traveled to Cape Town and The National Arts Festival.

“The Pitch” is a new pseudo-musical-super-comedy about corruption, greed, and what happens when capitalism meets theatre. It premiered at Alexander Bar and featured Roland Perold and Lady Aria Grey with David Lubbe on piano. It won best new play at the Writers’ Guild of South Africa muse awards.

Tweet! Is that cyber connection worth it? This wacky musical marked The Waterfront Theatre School’s debut appearance at the South African National Arts Festival. It featured music and lyrics by Roland Perold, with dramaturgy by Paul Griffiths. The production showcased final year students from the college.

You Bet Your Life! is an original musical that follows recently deceased Jonny through his own TV game-show as he fights for redemption. Filled with humour and heart, the show enjoyed a full workshop and three runs staged by creators David Fick and Roland Perold.
