This contemporary song cycle explores the questions four young adults face as they come of age and seek simple truths in a complex world. Musical vignettes follow them on a journey of confronting emotions, escaping expectation and deciphering complicated relationships. Find out just how many other people also spend Friday nights at home on Facebook or what to do when your boyfriend likes theatre and flower arranging a little bit too much!
The shows was directed by the acclaimed practitioner Paul Griffiths, Musical Direction by Garth Tavares and featured Roland Perold, Shannyn Fourie, David Fick and Luella Holland.
“Edges” is written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who won the 2007 Jonathan Larson Award for the show. They received the Richard Rodgers Award for Musical Theatre for their “Dogfight” musical, the Tony Award for “Dear Evan Hansen” and wrote the music for “The Greatest Showman” (film) for which they won an Oscar for best original song.
Performer-producer Roland Perold who met with Pasek says: “Benj and Justin wrote ‘Edges’ when they were at the University of Michigan, themselves young emerging adults. They gave voice to their feelings and attitudes, fears and aspirations and created this piece of work that became overwhelmingly popular. Since 2007 the show has enjoyed 60 different presentations worldwide.”
On the back of Perold’s production of “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change”, which won a Standard Bank Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival (NAF), “Edges” was selected to appear on the NAF Arena Platform; an initiative highlighting innovative, original and creatively outstanding work.
Edges enjoyed its premier at Kalk Bay Theatre, was featured on the Arena Platform at NAF and had a second run in Cape Town at On Broadway Theatre (also known as The Space).
