Roland Perold takes centre stage as Musical Director for the South African première of Company, Stephen Sondheim’s landmark work, presented for the first time professionally in the country.
This witty, incisive exploration of love, marriage, and modern urban relationships were seen in the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre.
Perold’s contribution extends beyond the orchestra pit. In addition to leading the musical direction with his well-recognised authority, he appears on stage as Peter, opposite Liesl Copping as his wife. As one reviewer noted, he is “not only in charge of Musical Direction, which he handles with his acknowledged strength, but he’s also in the show … one of the cast’s most powerful members.”
The production features a formidable ensemble including Charon Williams-Ros, Peter Court, Jessica Sole, Anthony Downing, Lyle Buxton, Lisa Bobbert, Anne-Marie Clulow, Yamikani Phiri, Roshanda Lewis, Keryn Scott, Leah Mari, and Bryan Hiles in the central role of Bobby. The creative team is led by director Steven Stead, with set design by Greg King, choreography by Simone Mann, and lighting design by Tina le Roux.
Ground-breaking, sharp, and emotionally resonant, Company arrives as a major milestone for South African musical theatre.
